In Ireland smoking is banned in all pubs and restaurants, closed public spaces, most workplaces, and on public transportation. Although similar bans are imposed in some cities and states including California and New York, the law makes Ireland the first country in the world to ban smoking nationally.
In light of Ireland's exceptionally high rate of heart disease, Irish Health Minister Michael Martin called the law a "no brainer." "We have to do something," he added, "go the extra mile, to get that rate down." The Republic of Ireland has Europe's highest rate of heart disease, with around 7,000 people dying each year from smoking related illnesses.
Although the government states that two thirds of the Irish citizens support the smoking ban, the bill does have its critics.

At the first glace this seems to be a bad thing for the smoker but after a while you get used to it and smoke less not to mention that your clothes will not stink the morning after. The good part is that you get to know a lot of people smoking outside the pubs just like you. There are several couples since the smoking ban who met outside smoking in front of a bar/pub.

If you smoke in public spaces you can be fined up to €3000. Remember you are not allowed to smoke in the airport either which can be a real pain if you have your flight delayed.
